What Are Ear Tubes?

Ear tubes, or tympanostomy tubes, are tiny hollow cylinders placed into the eardrum to improve airflow and prevent fluid accumulation in the middle ear. These tubes can be made from plastic, silicone, or metal and typically stay in place for several months to a year before naturally falling out.

The primary goal of ear tubes is to help ventilate the middle ear, reduce infection frequency, and restore hearing clarity. The procedure is one of the most common—and most effective—ENT surgeries performed in both children and adults.

Who Needs Ear Tubes?

Ear tube placement may be recommended for individuals with persistent or recurring middle ear problems that do not respond to medication. Common candidates include:

  • Children with recurrent ear infections (three or more in six months, or four or more in a year).
  • Adults or children with fluid buildup (otitis media with effusion) that causes pressure, hearing loss, or discomfort.
  • Individuals with Eustachian tube dysfunction, where poor ventilation leads to pressure imbalances.
  • Patients with hearing loss or speech delays linked to chronic ear fluid.
  • Those who experience chronic ear pain or balance issues from middle ear blockages.

By equalizing ear pressure and allowing fluid to drain properly, ear tubes can dramatically improve hearing, reduce infection frequency, and enhance overall quality of life.

What to Expect During the Procedure

Ear tube placement is a simple, outpatient procedure that typically takes 10 to 15 minutes per ear.

Consultation and Evaluation

Your visit begins with a thorough evaluation by one of our board-certified otolaryngologists. Using an otoscope or tympanogram, we assess the ear’s structure and determine whether fluid or infection is present. We’ll discuss your symptoms, medical history, and any prior ear infections to confirm that ear tubes are the right solution.

The Procedure

During the procedure, the patient is placed under general anesthesia (for children) or local anesthesia (for adults). A small incision is made in the eardrum, and any trapped fluid is gently suctioned out. The ear tube is then inserted into the opening to maintain ventilation and prevent further buildup. The entire process is quick, and patients usually go home the same day.

Recovery and Follow-Up

Most patients experience minimal discomfort after ear tube placement. Children may return to school and normal activities within 24 hours. Our providers will schedule follow-up visits to monitor healing and ensure the tubes remain in place and functional. Ear tubes typically fall out naturally within 6 to 12 months as the eardrum heals. If they remain longer, your ENT may remove them during a simple office visit.

Benefits of Ear Tube Placement

Ear tube placement offers several important benefits, including:

  • Fewer ear infections and less need for antibiotics.
  • Improved hearing due to proper middle ear ventilation.
  • Reduced ear pressure and pain, enhancing overall comfort.
  • Better speech and language development in children affected by hearing loss.
  • Lower risk of long-term ear damage or scarring from chronic infections.

These improvements not only relieve symptoms but also support better communication, learning, and overall well-being—especially in young patients.

Ear Tubes in Children vs. Adults

While ear tube surgery is most common in children, adults may also benefit, particularly those with chronic sinus or allergy issues that affect ear pressure. Adults often experience faster recovery and may undergo the procedure under local anesthesia in the office. Regardless of age, the results are typically the same: reduced infection frequency, better hearing, and greater comfort.

Ear Tube FAQs

How long do ear tubes stay in?

Most ear tubes naturally fall out after 6 to 12 months. Some may remain longer and require removal by your ENT.

Can my child swim or bathe with ear tubes?

In most cases, it’s safe to swim in clean, chlorinated water, but we recommend avoiding diving and untreated water. Your ENT may suggest earplugs for added protection.

What happens after the tubes fall out?

The eardrum typically heals on its own after the tube falls out. Some children may need a second set if infections recur.

Are ear tubes painful?

The procedure is painless, and most patients feel only mild discomfort for a short time afterward. Over-the-counter pain relievers are usually sufficient.

Can adults get ear tubes?

Yes. Adults can benefit from ear tubes if they experience chronic fluid buildup, pressure changes, or infections that don’t respond to medication.
