Understanding Hearing Loss
Hearing loss occurs when one or more parts of the ear or auditory system are not functioning properly. It can affect people of all ages, though it becomes more common with age or after exposure to loud environments. Hearing loss is often categorized into three main types:
- Conductive hearing loss: Caused by problems in the outer or middle ear that block sound from reaching the inner ear. Common causes include earwax buildup, ear infections, or damage to the eardrum.
- Sensorineural hearing loss: The most common type, often resulting from damage to the inner ear or auditory nerve. This may occur from aging, noise exposure, or certain medical conditions.
- Mixed hearing loss: A combination of conductive and sensorineural hearing loss, involving both mechanical and nerve-related causes.
Recognizing the early signs—such as frequently asking people to repeat themselves or increasing TV volume—can help prevent further deterioration and improve long-term outcomes.
